Calm today, but turbulence ahead. U.S. job openings show stable labor market ahead of Trump job cuts and tariffs. Businesses hesitate on hiring as President Trump moves to reshape the U.S. economy. The numbers: Job openings in the U.S. rose slightly in January and indicate a solid labor market, but fewer companies are hiring compared with a few years ago, and the uncertainty caused by President Donald Trump’s tariffs could further depress employment in the short run. Job postings increased to 7.7 million in January 2025 from 7.5 million at the end of 2024, the government said Tuesday. The number of openings in December 2024 was close to a two-year low.
